Some things to think/do about over the summer:
Go create a profile on www.quavermusic.com
There are some great games and ways to compose your own music !
Know those note names on the staff!
Take lessons on an instrument!
Keep using the knowledge you gained this year a little over the summer and I look forward to seeing you in the fall!

Concert wrap up
What a busy last 2 weeks we have had in the music room!
Everyone has performed for the school as well as their parents at an evening event. It has been so nice to see everyone---and my boys had fun being at the performances as well!
What's next for the music room?
Kinder/1st: learning some more basic music knowledge
2nd/3rd: working on Boomwhackers and increasing their music reading ability
4th: finishing up their time on the recorders
5th: instrument essay....learning more about an instrument that they may play in the fall!
6th/7th band: back to some concepts that to be completed before the end of the year.
7Music: we're learning about opera!
8th: all students are creating/working on a composition on an instrument of their choice. I can't wait to see what they come up with!
Spring is busy with so many events for the school and it is an exciting time of year! Hope you enjoy the last month or so of school!

Spring performances part 1!
Spring is here!
Performances have begun for the spring and it is so fun to see all of the students performing music at St. Joe's!
Last week we started off with the middle school students either playing instruments or singing songs for the school and their families.
The 7/8 band also had a field trip to Battle Ground last Friday which kept them busy all day! They were tired when they left---they had a 3 hour rehearsal, group adjudication, and band concert all in the same day.
I'm proud of all that these groups have accomplished this spring and we will go back to individual/group work that will take them through to the end of the school year.
Next up: K-5!
Here are the details:
Thursday, May 8th at 9:15am and 6:30pm in the gym
The morning is an assembly so we can perform for the middle schoolers.....
Clothing: uniform for the day, casual spring clothes for the night
There will be songs sung, instruments played, and different styles of music performed!
It has been great to see some of you recently and look forward to seeing more of you next week when the younger students perform!

Spring is coming!
Hello everyone!
Now that the snowy weather is behind us (we think) there are so many things to look forward to in the music room!
Last week, the 4th and 5th graders went to the Oregon Symphony's Youth Concert. What a great time! The orchestra put together a varied program for the students and had them sing a short song part way through the performance. I hope that all of you enjoyed it (parents too!) and I look forward to going next year with this age group.
Remember: the trimester ends on Mar. 12. Make sure that you have turned in all materials to Mrs. Miller for full or partial (late) credit!
Upcoming events:
Spring concerts!!!
Middle School:
Thursday, April 24th at 2:15 and 6:30pm in the gym
This concert showcases all of our students in grades 6-8 vocally and instrumentally. We have just begun to work on the pieces and I can't wait to have them perform them for you.
Please make sure that your child is at both performances: this is a graded event.
Friday, April 25th ALL DAY Band Festival in Battle Ground
As if the day before wasn't enough, the 7th and 8th graders will be going off campus all day and participating in a massive band performance. They will also be adjudicated as a group in the afternoon before the band concert at 5pm that night. Hope to see those middle school parents there that night!
Elementary students:
NEW EVENT!!
K-5 Spring performance! Thursday, May 8th at 2:15 and 6:30pm
In the coming weeks we will be starting to work on our pieces that will involve singing, recorders, and other random instruments!
Put this date on the calendar---all students are needed to perform at both performances!!
Have a great week and email me if you have any questions!

Hello!
Happy Catholic School's week! I hope all of you have a great time with the dress up days as well as all of the special activities we have planned this week.
A few upcoming events:
Feb. 27th: 4th and 5th grade are heading out to the Youth Concert presented by the Oregon Symphony. Field trip forms will be going home soon.
Apr. 24: Middle School Concert: all 6-8 will be performing!
Apr 25: 7th and 8th grade band are heading off to the Middle School Band festival!
May 8th: K-5 Spring concert
I know that all of you are not really thinking of the spring, but I wanted to at least put those dates on your home calendars/phones. =)
At the moment, the younger grades are listening to and learning more about other countries through stories and music. I hope that they have shared part of those songs with you!
4th grade has begun the recorder journey--we are starting to get past Hot Cross Buns and work on more "advanced" songs! Make sure that your 4th graders is practicing at home!
5th grade is working on how music is structured and follows a pattern.
6th grade is working on ties, dotted half notes, and learning more new notes!
7/8 band is beginning the sheet music which will be performed at their concert and the band festival! It is a little challenging, but I can't wait to hear it performed in a few months!
7/8 music has been working on the past: musically speaking. We have learned about the Baroque and Classical periods so far and will learn more about the other time periods next month.
Enjoy this fun, crazy week!

Thanksgiving!
Hi everyone,
Happy almost end of the trimester! A quick reminder about grading: grades K-4 receive the 4-1 on skills and participation as well as a comment, and 5-8 receive a letter grade, a 4-1 on skills and participation and a lovely comment. Remember that a 2 in the skills department is FINE--as the year progresses that skills number will go up since they will learn more grade necessary skills. Keep an eye out for the report cards in the next week or so! Let me know if you have any questions about your student's grade.
Advent prep is going well--the students should know both of their songs by now and we are just working on the final blessing song as well as the song that we sing while classes are getting off and on the altar. Hopefully you are hearing the songs at home!
Middle school program: Christmas is on the way! All of these grades are working hard in class and at home practicing what they will perform in a few weeks.
Please make sure to email/contact me if your child will not be at these programs, this is our focus this month and next, so they will lose points for not being there without having a note (being sick is unplanned of course and we can talk about makeup assignments at that time).
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving---see you next week at the start of the second trimester!
