December performances!

Hi everyone!

There are a few changes to the December performances that I wanted to share.

Advent program: Wednesday, December 14th at 6:30pm in the church
This program is for PreK-5th grade students.

Middle School Winter program: Friday, December 16th at 11:15am in the gym
This program is for 6-8th grade students.

Please remember that these programs are mandatory for each student. If they are not at their performance on the 14th or 16th, then I need to have an email or letter from the parent explaining why the child will not be there. This is a graded assignment in my gradebook and their grade will lower if they are not in attendance. If I have a letter from the parent, then the student will complete a make-up assignment.

Let me know if you have any other questions--I look forward to seeing you next month!

October!

Hi everyone!

The music room is just busy with a variety of units/concepts throughout the grades:
K: learning music terms for loud/soft, tempo and how it changes the song, and moving to tempo
1st: review previous music terms as well as sing with 2 part harmony in a short song
2nd: identifying introductions/codas in songs, hearing the same song played in two different styles, and reviewing notes
3rd: units on harmony, melody, and form
4th: Boomwhackers (plastic pitched tubes) are being used to learn note names, create harmony, and play independently
5th: reviewing recorders!
6th: tackled our first quiz, playing songs with our first 5 notes and getting pitch worked out in the brass instruments
7th band: review notes, but also introducing enharmonics, eighth rests, staccato, and legato (tenuto)
7/8 music: working on drums! counting rhythms correctly, creating ensembles of 4-7 players each playing something different!
PreK: our first visit was today and look forward to seeing you as much as we can throughout the fall!

Halloween is approaching the elementary grades so that will be what is on the schedule for the rest of the month for them.

It is wonderful to see your students grow and learn in the music room!

Let me know if you have any questions about what is going on in the music room!

Welcome Back!

Happy start of the school year!

I hope that you had a wonderful summer and have been getting back into the school schedule the last 2 weeks. With Sausage Fest in 2 days there is so much excitement in the air that it is hard to stay focused at times.

One thing:
I sent home back to school letters to everyone explaining what we are doing this year. In grades 5-8, those letters are to be signed and brought back to me either today or tomorrow. Hopefully all of the letters are in on time since it is the first grade in the gradebook!

I look forward to seeing all of the families around the school with all of our events going on this fall: Sausage Fest, Back to School night, etc. and hope that we can touch base to say hi or introduce ourselves if you are a new family.

Again, welcome back!

Shine and Show!

What a wonderful job the PreK, 1, 2, 3, 4th grade students did last night! I am so pleased that they performed so well. Thank you so much for coming and watching your child perform!

As we get closer to the end of the year, students will be learning more about composers, writing essays (which are due today!), or taking playing/written tests. If they are taking tests, they are notified 5-7 days before hand so they can be fully prepared.

Any questions? Just send me an email.
Have a wonderful 3 day weekend!

Performances!

Great job middle schoolers at our concert last week! I am very proud of the progress that you have made this year!

Next concert:
Shine and Show!
Grades PreK, 1-4 are up next on Thursday, May 26th at 6pm in the cafeteria.
A letter is being sent home this week with more details on what each class/grade is working on.
Each class (except 4th grade) is working on performing a fable with a song that shares the moral of the story. 4th grade will be performing duets on their recorders, so watch out for those kids working on memorizing their parts.
After performing, check out the rest of the art throughout the school!

Happy May everyone!

Spring concert

Our Spring Middle School Concert is right around the corner!
Here are the details:
Thursday, April 28th at 2pm and 6:30pm
ALL 6-8th grade students are performing a few songs for the school and their families.

A few reminders:
Band students: please bring a labeled folding stand to school that day (if you have one).
ALL students: clothing reminders for the night performance: NO shorts, blue jeans, sweats, or shirts with words or pictures on them. Please dress up for our performance!
5th grade students are invited to come to the night performance so they can learn more about next year. Beacock's music store will be there with a display of instruments. The 5th grade students can try them out and get excited about next year.

Please note: this is a required event for all 6-8th grade students. If they are not there, then they need a makeup assignment or they receive a zero in my gradebook for this event.

Questions? Email me!
Look forward to a great performance in less than 2 weeks!

March and the Oregon Symphony

Hello!
Spring is almost here! There are many activities going on in the music room right now!

My middle school students have begun preparation for their spring concert which is at the end of next month, 4th graders are knee deep in recorder playing, and my younger students will be starting some new instruments in the next few weeks!

Trimester 2 is ending this Friday, so grading for music class depends in participation and understanding of the music concepts. Look for those grades to be coming home in the next few weeks.

Next week my 4th and 5th grade students will be going on our annual field trip to the Oregon Symphony! This year's theme: "Musical Seasonings" all of the pieces they will be hearing are based on our 4 seasons. Two pieces will be used quite a bit: Vivaldi's "Four Seasons, and Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring."
I can't wait to share this opportunity with our students and to have them experience live orchestral music.

Concert date change and thank you!

Thank you to all of my 2nd-4th graders who performed yesterday at our Grandparents/Special Friend assembly--you did a fantastic job! I am very pleased with my 4th grade recorder students who volunteered to play yesterday and learned the song last week!

Concert date change:
The Middle School Concert is being moved from June 2nd to Thursday, April 28th, 2011 at 2:15 and 6:30pm. Remember all middle school students are performing that day and it is a mandatory event. Please put this on your home calendars!

Happy 2011!

Hello!

Hope that 201 has had a great start for you and your family.

A few items that are getting started in the music room this month:
Kindergarten and 1st grade---they are hearing stories and songs from different countries which will help them with their note reading.
2nd/3rd grade: we are getting ready for another performance! There will be an assembly on Jan. 31 (Grandparents/Special friends day) for our Get Caught folks and then the students will sing a few songs for the audience.  They are working hard to get ready to perform in a few weeks!
4th grade: Recorders! We started last week and so far, all are very excited to play. Every student is to bring their recorders home, practice them, and bring them back to school on our music days.  Note reading skills are being worked on as well as playing the recorder.
5th grade: Unit on Form--how is our music structured?  Carmina Burana (by Carl Orff) will help them out on this unit.
Band students: lots of new concepts/notes are on the way!  Be ready for playing quizzes!
7/8 music students: New topic---the Blues.  We will learn more about the time period, style, and people who were involved in this groundbreaking style of music.

We are busy this month!  It is good to be back from the holidays!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Miller
